How do I know it's real copper?

Pure copper isn't magnetic. A lot of copper-colored jewelry is plated: a thin copper layer over a cheaper base metal that a magnet will often stick to.

Quick check: hold a fridge magnet against the metal of your piece. If the copper itself is attracted to the magnet, it isn't solid copper. Some of our pieces have small built-in magnets, so test the copper away from those spots.
